You don't have to be in crisis to need life transitions therapy

Life transitions can catch you completely off guard, even when you saw them coming.

Maybe you've left a long career and don't know who you are outside of it. Maybe you're going through a divorce, a diagnosis, the death of someone central to your life, or a move that uprooted everything you knew. Maybe nothing dramatic happened at all, and yet something shifted, and now you feel like you're walking through a version of your life that doesn't quite fit anymore.

That disorientation is real. It's not weakness, and it's not something to push through alone. It's what happens when the structure you organized your life around changes faster than you can adjust to it.

You might be functioning fine on the outside, going to work, answering messages, keeping things running, while carrying a private weight that has no name yet. That's exactly when talking to someone matters most. Not because something is wrong with you, but because making sense of major life change is genuinely hard work, and you don't have to do it without support.

What is life transitions therapy?

Life transitions therapy is individual counselling focused on navigating periods of significant change, not just crisis, but any shift that disrupts how you understand yourself and your path forward.

This includes expected transitions (retirement, kids leaving home, a new relationship) as well as unwanted ones (job loss, grief, chronic illness, separation). It also includes the quiet, harder-to-name transitions: realizing that the life you built no longer feels like yours, or discovering that the person you were before a major event isn't who you are now.

Therapy for life transitions helps you process the feelings that come with change, grief, confusion, relief, anger, hope, and build a clearer sense of what comes next. It's not about going back. It's about moving forward with more intention than survival mode allows.

Life transitions therapy with Jennifer Codlin, RSW

Jennifer Codlin is a Registered Social Worker (RSW) registered with both the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers and the BC College of Social Workers, which means she is licensed to support you wherever you are in Ontario or BC, virtually and by phone.

Before becoming a therapist, Jennifer spent 12 years in Human Resources. She has lived through workplace stress, burnout, grief, and chronic illness, not as a clinical observer, but as someone who knows what it costs to keep going when life is hard. She is also a Certified Grief Educator, which means she brings specialized training to transitions involving loss in any form: the death of a person, a relationship, a role, a version of yourself.

Her approach draws on CBT, DBT, ACT, somatic therapy, and mindfulness, not as a fixed script, but as a practical toolkit adapted to where you are. The goal is never to make you dependent on therapy. It's to help you build the clarity, skills, and resilience to navigate whatever comes next.

Jennifer works with adults 16 and older. Sessions are $145 for 60 minutes, virtual or by phone.

  • RSW registered in BC and Ontario, with the ability to see clients across both provinces
  • Certified Grief Educator, with specialized support for loss at any life stage
  • Former HR professional, with real-world credibility for burnout and workplace transitions

Therapy for life transitions is typically short-to-medium term, focused, practical, and paced by you. Many people find clarity and forward momentum within a few months. Jennifer will work with you to decide what a useful course of support looks like.

The benefits of life transitions therapy

You'll feel less alone in the disorientation. One of the most relieving things about life transitions therapy is discovering that what you're experiencing has a shape, a logic, and a way through. That recognition alone shifts something.

You'll stop spinning and start moving. When you're in the middle of a major change, it's easy to spend enormous energy processing the same thoughts in circles. Therapy creates a space to actually work through them, so you can start making decisions again.

You'll understand yourself in the new version of your life. Transitions aren't just about what happened on the outside. They require re-understanding who you are. Jennifer's work helps you get clear on your values, your strengths, and what you actually want, not what you're supposed to want.

You'll have real skills for what comes next. The coping strategies you build through CBT, DBT, and mindfulness don't disappear when therapy ends. They stay with you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Jennifer is an RSW registered with both the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers and the BC College of Social Workers. She sees clients virtually across both provinces.

Jennifer supports adults navigating grief, burnout, career transition, divorce or separation, chronic illness or diagnosis, retirement, major relationship changes, identity shifts, and life stages like becoming a parent or children leaving home.
